Media Group? Comedy Quintruplet? Out of touch group of white men? However you wanna put it, one thing is undeniable. We just won't quit making sub-par content. I don't know that obsessed is the word but something about almost trying to be content creators is just delicious to us. What is Drive By Dogs? Let's start from the beginning.
If somebody were to ask me what a Drive By Dogs is I would have no answer for them. Talk about a phrase that hits the ear wrong haha. Everytime I have to give somebpdy my email address at a business it's a dificult experience. is not an email anybody is expecting to hear haha. I once was talking to a representative from United Airlines over the phone who asked me for my email, and when I gave it to him was told that I can put Gmail out of business if we started offering email as a service. This man was overjoyed at the thought of whatever a Drive By Dogs is and urged me to share it with the world. To nobodies surprise we have not pivoted to rival Google in the email server business haha.
7 years ago now, I decided that I wanted to start a podcast. I spent my whole childhood listening to talk radio. Lex and Terry on Q105.1 and Adam Carolla's old Loveline clips from the early 2000's were absoltely formative to me. I remember my dad, who was a painter, would spend his entire working day listening to talk radio. Maybe I was looking for validation? We all just want to be seen. I think my love for talk radio started as a way to connect with my father, and eventually became a way to define myself.
When I say I wanted to start a podcast, I never thought I was going to be like the King of Comedy or anything. I just thought they seemed fun haha. I remember when the Rooster Teeth Podcast first started, orginally called the Drunk Tank, I would transcribe Burnie Burns lines for an entire episode of the show, then speak them out during the episode to pretend like I was a part of something as cool as Rooster Teeth. Podcasts to me are for the enviroment that they create. I felt like every podcast I listened to I was the hosts friend and to a certain extent I was right. Me getting into podcasts was literally just a way to make friends and help to foster some sense of inclusivity that other shows have always given to me.
So back to the point, 7 years ago or so I decided to start a podcast and began to look down my list of friends to see who would be right for this project. I landed on the name Rylee Mcnemar who I had class with, and invited him to Chic Fil A for a "Business Opportunity" hahaha. We together came up with three more friends to include on this endeavor and left with plans to record some test episodes in his basement. Me, Rylee, my friend Ian, and my other friend Ben sat criss cross applesauce in Rylee's Dad's basement around an overturned mini trashcan. As for recording equipment we placed my cracked iPhone 6s on the trash can and turned on Voice Memos and just started talking lmao.
We recorded 7 test episodes before we ever posted a single one of them and none of them were particulary good looking back lol but we were learning. Finally we got some confidence, recorded a reasonably good episode, and pressed publish on our RSS Feed. Now all we were missing is the name, what do we call this thing? Growing up watching Rooster Teeth I knew the one thing they suggested when coming up with a name for your online content is that the name is uniquely searchable. That when somebody types in whatever you come up with your project is the only thing that comes up. With that being the only requirement I somehow landed on the name Drive By Dogs and for some god forsaken reason nobody vetoed it haha. To my credit it was a uniquely searchable name, and honest;y overtime it has grown on me so fucking much. Unfortunately all of that unique searchability was ruined when some college lady in Atlanta tought a dog to drive a car and posted the now viral video on Youtube. Our future was now in trouble haha.
Why Drive By Dogs
Cast & Crew
I have been really fortunate to be surrounded by so many talented people. When I started this production group I had one rule for adding on new members to the group. They had to be talented in a way that I wasn't. I felt like every Youtube Channel I liked was just 5 of the same type of guys. Every video game channel I liked was just four dudes with cargo shorts and Zelda tshirts and I wanted to be different than that. I wanted people who I genuinely got along with, but that were good at things that I wasn't good at. So far this has proved to be valuable. Below I have writted short descriptions for everybody who has been involved in making Drive By Dogs what it is today.
It is undeniable that this is a picture of me. Fuck it. This fucking guy is responsible for the most underwhelming internet company of the 2010's. Knock Knock, who's there? This guy! I've come to live with you on account of my failing internet brand.
I met Rylee back in High School and for most of our schooling experience and despite having a lot of the same friends we never really talked. I think my first words directly to him were, "I'd like to start a business with you, wanna meet me at Chic Fil A after school?" haha. You'll notice this is a trend for me. Rylee is the son of an esteemed local photographer who is wicked smart. He undersells it but the guy really has an eye for directing and color. Over the course of the 7 last 7 years Rylee has transformed to the only guy I knew with a camera, to one of my best friends in the world and my roommate!
Ian has been one of my best friends for what I've been telling people is 15 years lol. I have to give credit to my guy Ian for being the most loyal person I maybe have ever met. One time in high school he walked into class and I was laying on floor spitting onto this metal thing. He asks, "What are you doing?" I say, "spitting on this metal thing, wanna help?". Dude no question joined in. What a trooper. Ian is the best writer I know and his presence is always felt by everyone he is with. I am lucky to have him on my team and to have been working with him for over 250 years now. He also lives with Rylee & I.
At one point maybe two years after we recorded the first episode of the podcast we had some members of our group drop out and focus on other parts of their life. Rylee had a "Friend"m idk why this is in quotes haha, who had been working in the production of video game based short films. We invited Fritz over to record a podcast and I literally met him on air haha. Go back and listen to the 10th episode of the Drive By Dogs Podcast and you can hear us talking for the first time. Fritz is an amazingly talented storyteller. His vision is really profound and I'm grateful to be working with him.
Adam is the mot recent member of our group and has been working with us for about two years as of writing this. Adam was Fritz' lifelong creative partner and I rpomise you they are just the same person. Adam moved here from Raliegh, NC to work with us and fucking one month later I moved to Georgia for some personal reasons haha. I still feel bad. Cut to now we are back to working together and living in the same city. Adam is an inspiring individual with an incredible work ethic. I hope I get to work with him for a long time.
